Watseka was founded March 4, 1867. An election was held for mayor and city council, and on March 11, 1867, a mayor and 4 council members were seated.

On September 1, 1997, the city moved its operations to a one-story building at 231 E. Oak in order to be in compliance with the American with Disability Act (ADA). The mayor and eight council members meet here.

The city's business office is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is a drive through facility for water payments and other "drop off" business..

Watseka currently is offering Tax Incremental Financing (T.I.F.) to assist businesses and individuals with startup or expansion costs. There is also a revolving loan fund available to assist businesses that meet certain criteria.
